Hearing loss is a hidden disability, most often; it starts with a mild hearing impairment, which gradually increases over time. People notice it only when it has reached a moderate level and spoken speech becomes difficult to understand.

Causes

Today, loud noise has become a part of life. From the sound of car horns, firecrackers, or loud speakers, our eardrums are subject to a lot of torture. Listening to music on full volume on an MP3 player or at the local disco just adds to the problem.

However, all hearing loss is not caused due to loud noise. Congenital factors such as inherited genetic deafness, Rh incompatibility, frequent cold, wax, trauma, and infections of the middle ear are some other common causes of hearing loss in children, adults and the elderly.

Treatment:-

In case of ear infections leading to hearing loss, medical or surgical treatment is required, for which it is advisable to visit an ENT surgeon. If it is age-related or gradual in nature, then a hearing aid or a cochlear implant is the solution, for which you need to visit and audiologist. Hearing impairment can be avoided to a certain degree if proper precautions are followed. The most obvious are avoiding places of loud noise and music and wearing protective devices if required. On the medical front, precautions include treating infections immediately and avoiding ototoxic drugs. There is also not enough awareness regarding hearing loss, especially among parents.

Keep stomach ailments at bay by performing these asanas

Dhanurasana:-

Lie down on your stomach with your face down. Bend your legs and grasp the ankles with your hands. Now inhale a raise the hind part of your body and then raise your chest too. Bend the neck backward and keep your eyes closed. There should be tug of war between your legs and hands. The entire body should rest just on your belly. Arch the back into a bow shape. Hold the posture for as long as your can. Breathe normally. Return to normal position, and repeat twice.

Benefits:-

 Exercises the spine fully, making it stronger and more flexible; benefits the lungs, heart, kidney, liver, intestines, spleen and stomach; strengthens all digestive organs

Vajrasna:-

Kneel and sit firmly on your heels. Open your heels, keep the toes together. The heels should touch the sides of the hips. Place both hands on the respective knees, palms downwards. Keep your back and head straight, but not tense, close your eyes. Sit in this position as long as you can, keep breathing normally.Caution:- Those suffering from knee pain should not do this asana.

Benefits:-

This is the only asana that can be done after meals. It is beneficial in hernia, piles and hydrocele. It also alleviates backache, sciatica pain and tired legs. A meditative asana, it keeps the mind stable and relaxed. Muslims and Zen Buddhists use this position for prayer and meditation.

Naukasana:-

Lie on your stomach, face downward. Stretch out both your hands straight ahead. Elbows should be straight, and palms joined together in namaskara mudra. Also join legs and heels. Inhale and raise your hands, head and chest from the front and your legs from behind. Now stretch your body and keep it taut. Your entire body weight should be on your belly. Close your eyes and hold the posture for as long as you can, breathing normally. Then release and relax. Repeat three times.

Caution:-

Not recommended if you suffer from hernia, peptic ulcer or hypertension

Lakhs of women in India suffer from the problem of heavy bleeding during their periods. This not only causes extreme inconvenience, discomfort, loss of workdays, and exclusion from religious activities but also severe weakness and anaemia. Many women in their 30’s and 40’s suffer from dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB), where the womb (uterus) is normal, but they have heavy menses. The diagnosis of DUB is made by an internal examination by the gynaecologist. A sonogram can be used to rule out tumours, which are usually the cause of heavy bleeding or cancer.

Over the years, women with DUB have been treated with prolonged hormonal treatment, repeated curetting, or removal of the womb by a major surgery (hysterectomy), all of which have significant risks and complications. However, today there are two new techniques. Which have made the management of heavy menses simple, safe and quick. The uterine balloon ablation therapy involves putting a small tube with an inflatable balloon at the top, into the womb through the vagina. There are no cuts or stitches required for this. The balloon is filled with hot water through a computerized system and the lining of the womb is heated for eight minutes. This thins the lining of the womb and prevents it from growing. This procedure can be done under local or general anaesthesia and can be safely done even in patients who have medical problems such as diabete, high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease where other operations are risky to perform.

This results either in stoppage or reduction in menstrual bleeding permanently. This procedure is best suited for women who have completed their family. The patient needs to be in hospital for a few hours and is fit to resume work from the next day. The other simple, non-surgical method is to insert a hormonal intrauterine device (LNG – IUD). This is a small T-shaped device, which looks like a copper T or loop and has hormone inside it. This can be placed inside the uterus in two minutes, without any anaesthesia and once inside the womb, it reduces or stops bleeding during menses for a period of five years. This also acts as contraceptive. This is a temporary method and the device can be removed at any time.

A team of international researchers has carried out a study and found that people who greet each other with handshakes are much more likely to pass on germs, such as flu and stomach bugs, than those who settle for a kiss.

          According to lead researcher Prof Sally Bloomfield of the London School of Hygiene, “The hands are critical in the chain of infection as they transmit infections form surfaces to people and between people. “Shaking hands in the main form of physical contact with each other but you don’t know what the other person has been touching before you greet them. People avoid kissing each other when they have a cold, but in fact they are more likely to pass on an infection by shaking someone’s hand.”

          In fact, the researchers, whose study has been funded by the international Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene, came to the conclusion after analyzing the effects of handshakes and kisses on a group of people, according to media reports. According to co-researcher Carol O’Boyle of the school of Nursing. University of Minnesota, “Hand hygiene is just as important when we are outside the home, on public transport, in the office, in the supermarket, or in a restaurant. Quite often it is not possible to wash our hands in these situations, but carrying an alcohol-based hand sanitizer means we cha make our hands hygienic whenever and wherever the need arises.” However, the study has pointed out that good hygiene is about more than just washing our hands. Although the hands are the main superhighway for the spread of germs, as they are the “last line of defense”, surfaces form which the hands become contaminated, such as food contact surfaces, door handles, tap handles and toilet seats.

What is Liposuction?

          The concept of liposuction is surprisingly simple. Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula (from the Latin word for reed, tube, cane). The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Men who want to boost their performance in the bedroom should drink pomegranate juice, says a new research. According to the University of California scientists, a daily glass can act like Viagra.

          Lead author Dr Christopher forest says that the juice is rich in antioxidants, which increases blood supply to the genitals. For the study, the team tested 53 men with libido problems. They found that nearly half the men who drank it for a month said they found it easier to perform.

          “Pomegranate juice has great potential,” the ‘Mirror’ quoted forest, as saying. Pomegranates have already been associated with reducing the risk of heart disease and preventing prostate cancer. Researchers had previously asserted that a daily 0.236 litre glass of the fruit’s juice not only increases the stability period of prostate cancer four-fold, but that the effect is so marked that they believe it can also make it possible for men between the ages of 60 to 75 to live out a full life span without the need for medical treatment, rather than dying from the cancer. That study was conducted by researchers from the University of California who looked at 50 prostate cancer patients who had surgery or radiotherapy, who had experienced a post-treatment increase of PSA (prostate specific antigen), indicating that cancer was still present in their bodies.

          During the study, the researchers measured the men’s PSA levels to calculate how long they took to double. They found that men suffering from prostate cancer with short doubling times are more likely to die from their illness, and that the average doubling time is 15 months. They noted that consuming a glass of pomegranate juice everyday extended the doubling period to 54 months, and that there was also evidence that the juice was actually killing of prostate cancer cells.

          Dr Allan Pantuck, who led the study, said that the improvements had been surprising, and that though it was not a cure, scientists may now be able to stump prostate cancer growth.

Sexual debut age linked to risks

            A new study has revealed that early and late sexual debut is linked to problems in sexual functioning. For the study, researchers examined the adult consequences of early or late sexual debut by conducting a secondary analysis of data from the National Sexual Health Survey. It was found that the timing of first sexual intercourse was linked to several sexual rise factors in men and women.

          Researchers found that early initiation and late initiation were both associated with various problems in sexual functioning, especially in men.
