People suffering from panic disorder may benefit from a 12-week course of talk therapy developed by scientists in the US. Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms like chest pain, heart palpitations and shortness of breath. It is a treatable condition for which doctors prescribe antidepressant medication of advice the patients to go through cognitive behaviour therapy. In the cognitive part of the therapy patients are taught to learn to recognize things that trigger panic attacks or make them worse. The beharioural part of the therapy involves learning ways of coping with anxiety, such as using breathing and relaxation techniques. The new therapy developed by researchers at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City involves twice-weekly sessions. It focuses on the symptoms of panic disorder as well as garnering insight about the various unconscious factors that may have caused the panic disorder to develop in the first place, reported the online edition of webMD. Such focus on the unconscious is the basic underpinning of psychoanalysis, the scientists said. Scientists studied 49 people with panic disorder and found that more than 70 percent of those in the talk therapy group showed significantly less anxiety and other panic symptoms. “People really go better, not just a little better, researcher Barbara Milord said.

ACCEPT LIFE AS IT COMES

Those living on the highest levels of life have learned to accept life on its own terms. There are some realities about life that we must accept. This is the key to living joyfully in communion with the heavenly while abiding here on earth. Life, no matter how we choose to look at it, is a challenge. It is the beginning of a struggle that continues until we breathe our last breath. Life is something that we did not request.

None of us asked to be born. Neither did we ask to be poor, or black, tall or short. We did not ask to be a part of one family as opposed to another.

Life is full of risks. There is a certain element of risk taking that is inherent in every venture we undertake; whether it is in business, or in marriage, in a profession or in athletics. We never have complete security within ourselves. For we know that every moment we live, our lives are in constant danger.

A stray bullet may hit us, a car emerging out of nowhere may crush us, and a slip of the foot may result in our death. So life is unpredictable. We get no warning, we are afforded no red alert, and we get no second chance at life.

And we might as well face the fact that our life is a dying life. As soon as we are born, we begin to die and every day we manage to somehow survive, we have only gained another step towards our grave. Each morning when we wake up from a refreshing sleep, we have died a little during the night.

As we go through the streets of the city, we are dying a little. As we go about our business on the job, we are dying a little. In essence, we are living in the land of the dying.

It will help you to accept life on its own terms rather than struggle against it. Identify and move from the limiting and conflicting, “either/or.” “Black or white,” “all or nothing”, illusory perception of life to an attitude that is open to all aspects of reality. We do this by accepting life on its own terms – accepting that pleasure and pain, happiness and unhappiness are all a natural part of the human experience.

Fighting against life’s realities and adopting a stance of negativism only creates unnecessary pain and difficulty in your life. Accepting life allows you to understand your frustrations, grow from them and experience life’s abundance.

You have heard people who make comments such as “I go with the flow.” What they are saying is this: I accept in life what I cannot change. I deal with it as it comes within the framework of my own knowledge and capabilities and spirit.

When inner negatives are dissolved, our outer life will be more harmonious and fulfilled. Understanding life helps you make the unconscious conscious; to see your misguided beliefs and negativity clearly, to understand their roots and causes, and most importantly – to transform them.

A complete path, it offers a practical, rational, honest, & above all, gentle and  self-accepting way to move form an attitude of you versus the world to one of you and the world; from you versus life to you and life. Fundamental to accepting life is to give recognition to the supreme life-giver. Whenever we praise God or give God recognition and acknowledgement, it is for life.

Is he trying drugs?

“Doctor, my son comes back late from college, eats a lot and just sleeps off. He doesn’t talk with us or even attempt to study. What do you think may be the problem?” “Have you considered the possibility that be may be onto drugs?” “Not my son. He’s always well behaved and obedient”.

This is a typical conversation in a psychologist’s clinic. Unfortunately these days it is heard more often than it should be. Statistics show that up to 25 percent of teens try drugs. Not all of them become addicted, of course, but it’s better to err on the safer side. The most frequently asked question about this is, “How do I know he’s onto drugs?”

Here are some pointers to watch out for:-

A change in habits – appetite and sleep may increase or decrease. He may talk less than usual and appear to be lost in his own world, or talk too much and appear more cheerful than usual Fall in academic performance Coming home late frequently Red eyes, frequent coughs Losing weight Changes in the pupil size frequent demands for money

What should you do?

Ask him tactfully whether things are okay, whether he has any problems or if he needs any help, reassuring him that you are always there for him in case of need. You may have to enlist him friends’ help if the evidence that he is onto drugs is strong, but this has obviously to be done diplomatically. Take the help of a professional counselor or psychologist. This is all the more necessary as undue anxiety may make you act counter-productively. A friendly chat with the professional perhaps followed by tests to detect drugs in the urine or blood would help.

How bad is it?

It varies as drugs range from ‘soft’ drugs such as cannabis (ganja) to ‘hard’ ones such as heroin (brown sugar etc). the former are easier to sotp.

Would he require rehabilitation?

Again, it depends – he probably would not need it if he is motivated to stop and is on ‘soft’ drugs.

Prevention

A congenial fami8ly atmosphere, absence of discord among parents, free communication at home and allowing children some personal space and freedom go a long way in preventing it. Even if you are very busy at home or work, spend some time daily withy your children. Things are not as bad as many think. Many youngsters have successfully kicked the habit, and there are plenty of help lines available such as Narcotics Anonymous.

If you want to spend time in your porch just relaxing for hours of on weekends, swings are the best option. A porch swing also offers respite from work or household chores. Even a balcony will do if you don’t have a porch.
Dynamics
Porch swings are generally about 4-5 feet long and have a depth of at least 2 feet. The back needs to be high enough to support the back. Vertical or horizontal slatted wooden backs are comfortable and airy although the curved back of a pod wicker swing is a snug fit. It is preferable for the seat to have slats and a bit of a slant or curve for comfort. Try out the various designs till you find whatever you like. Also, additional lengthwise support under the seta will offer strength and better dynamics. Position the swing in such a way that there is space for the swing to move along and arc of at least 4 feet. See that the swing is about 2 feet off the ground. The suspension can be done with stainless steel chains. A one-seater porch swing, generally of a light material like cane, can also be suspended with a strong heavy-duty steel spring. This gives bounce in addition to the gentle rocking movement. Chains are normally fitted to the seat of the swing for comfortable movement. There are four chains to secure the swing from the ceiling with two holding the front and two holding the back of the swing.
Suspended swings
A porch swing can be suspended from the ceiling or even a tree in the garden. Most swings are of wood although wicker and metal can be considered in an enclosed porch. Teak is excellent for outdoors as it can withstand most climatic conditions. Painting it a colour that will match the overall ambience of the porch can beautify a simple swing. For a luxurious option, consider a swing with plush cushions. Wicker basket swings are getting popular by the day and are widely available. An important and fundamental requirement for a suspended swing is that it must be tightly secured to the ceiling hook.
Stand-alone swings
Most stand-alone swings have an A frame for easy movement of the swing. Wood, wicker or metal is used although the frame is usually made of steel. The frame needs to be tightly secured to the ground or else it will topple. It is usually secured with concrete at the base. Designs and materials are plenty to choose from with some offering a canopy as well. Use all weather cushions for open porches. Gliders can be used instead of a regular swing if there is space constraint.
Unusual swings
For a unique swing, you can make use of an old armchair. Cut off its legs and suspend the chair from the ceiling with strong chains. You get an unusual porch swing that evokes nostalgic memories. Try out some colorful designs for kids where the seat itself is painted with flowers or their favorite cartoon character. For example, you can have your child’s swing with its seat painted like a leaf or a beetle.

When you plan your party, pick a theme. The theme can be decided based on the season you are having a party in and who your guests are likely to be. Whoever your guests are, keep your plan simple and easy to execute. Hire extra help for the day. So while external help can do everything, you must be in the center of all the planning. Don’t hesitate to put your foot down to make changes if something bothers you. Plan everything in advance, make your guest lists, send out invites well in advance and do remember to follow up by giving a reminder call on the day of the party.

While food is essential for any party, make sure you provide adequate food for vegetarians as well. Don’t try any new food on the day of the party. Stick to preparing things that are tried and tested. You may serve the food in a buffet or have a sit down dinner if the numbers of guests are less. Make sure you have enough of chairs for guests to sit on while they eat, place small stools or tables in strategic places so that they are able to put down their drink while eating.

Have the lights turned down, invest in dimmers if required. Harsh lights are not advisable. Set the mood. Make sure you have music selected in advance, or stack enough CDs in a multi-disc player. Intersperse the house with aromatic candles. Place palms or other indoor plants at vantage points in the room. Greenery and flowers add warmth.

Put little extras in the bathroom such as mints and a neutral shade lipstick.

Set an appointed space like a guest room or the children’s room where your guests can leave their handbags, umbrellas or coats so that they do not have to lug them around.

Make sure you are personally able to greet all your guests when they come in. ensure you spend an equal amount of time with everybody, keeping an eye on their glasses and plates for refills. A simple theme, with no fuss, good music good food and refreshments will ensure that everybody has a good time. Enjoy yourself! Sex is not a dirty word

A sex education programmed and syllabus developed by the ministry of human resource development, the National AIDS Control Organization, UNICEF and NCERT seems to have irked conservative groups across religious lines. The result? A ban on sex education in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Orissa and the appointment of a parliamentary standing committee on petitions headed by Venkaiah Naidu to look into the feasibility of sex education in Indian schools. It is important that this debate is conducted in the public arena, given the limitations of the proposed syllabus and its focus on HIV/AIDS alone. The top priority, however, is to take the stigma out of the word sexuality.

It is also important to understand the extent of sexual activity among adolescents and the problem of child sexual abuse; Sexual activity among children enjoys social sanction, tanks to the institution of child marriage. Even the government acknowledges this fact. The National Family Health Survey-3 accounts for more than half of all young women becoming sexually active by the age of 18. And almost one woman in every five gets pregnant by the age of 15. In some regions of India over 50 per cent of women are married between the ages of 15-19 years. In 2007, the Union government passed a new legislation, the Prohibition of child Marriage Act, 2006, to replace the Sharda Act to combat this menace.

A study conducted by the Family Planning Association of India among educated urban youth revealed that the average age when adolescent males had their first sexual experience was 14.8 years. Even if one chooses to disregard data about premarital sexual activities among adolescents, the high rate of early marriages in India makes it undeniable that there is a sexually active young population.

Child sexual abuse is a problem in India that cannot be brushed aside. A recent study carried out by the ministry of women and child development reported that 53.2 per cent of the child respondents were abused at least once and that 70 per cent of children did not report sexual abuse. The National Crime Records Bureau points out that of the crimes recorded against women, 74 per cent amounted to sexual abuse.

South Asia, particularly India, is known to be one of the biggest sources and destinations for human trafficking. Young children, both boys and girls, are trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation. The industry is estimated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes as worth $32 billion annually.

Given these facts, it is fallacious to assume that children do not engage in sexual activity. Sexual socialization in a child’s life happens through a variety of experiences, which are not adequately recognized in the present paradigm. In fact, one of the common problems that one encounters while addressing rights of children is that they are not seen as full-fledged human beings and citizens. Besides, children are not a homogeneous group. They may face disabilities by virtue of their identities like caste, religion, culture and gender.

Theories of development have proved that every stage in a child’s life needs to be addressed separately. Adolescence is a phase in a child’s life that is completely ignored, which makes children more vulnerable to unhealthy sexual encounters. Mishandling at this stage could result in an inability to understand and respect their own body for the rest of their lives, due to a lack of awareness and access to information.

We cannot as a nation behave like ostriches and wish away realities. State governments that have banned sex education and the voices that claim that there is no sexual activity among adolescents need to read the writing on the wall and acknowledge the need for a holistic sex education syllabus.

“Globally, women are up to twice as likely to be insomniac as men. But, higher educational attainment improve women’s night time sleep quality, it had the opposite effect on men,” according to the researchers.
